Short Info

Oleksandr Kolomiyets is a Ph.D. Student at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Language Intelligence & Information Retrieval (LIIR) research team. He received B. Sc. and M. Sc. degrees in Computer Science (NTUU KPI, Kiev, Ukraine), specialized in Cognitive Science with an emphasis in natural language processing and obtained an M. Sc. degree in Cognitive Science from the University of Osnabrück (Germany). During the last decade he was involved in a number of international industrial and research projects focused on information processing and retrieval. Since November 2007 he has been working on the Large scale distributed INDexation of multimedia Objects (LINDO) project with the focus on Question Answering systems (QA) as a means of advanced information retrieval.

Research

Under supervision of Marie-Francine Moens Oleksandr Kolomiyets pursues his Ph.D. in Engineering with an emphasis in semantic analysis of text and temporal information processing in particular. The research focus is the development and application of statistical machine learning and symbolic, rule-based techniques for temporal analysis of text. The implemented methods have been integrated into a portable-domain question answering system as modules for semantic analysis of natural language queries.
