Call for Papers
First International Symposium on
Generative and Component-Based Software Engineering
(GCSE'99)
http://www-stja.transit-online.de/gcse/
September 28-30, 1999
Messe Erfurt
Erfurt, Germany
Co-hosted with the Smalltalk and Java in Industry and
Education Conference '99 (STJA'99) and organized by the
Working Group "Generative and Component-Based Software
Engineering" of the German "Gesellschaft fuer Informa-
tik" under the auspices of the STJA Foundation.
Intention
Component-based software development is expected to
bring a productivity increase to software development com-
parable to the introduction of the assembly line in manufac-
turing. Unfortunately, current component technologies suffer
from several problems. For example, increasing the general-
ity and size of components usually causes complexity explo-
sion and performance degradation; large configuration spaces
are not managed efficiently; components suffer from incompa-
tibilities and redundant implementations of similar
features. Generative approaches have the potential to
address these problems with techniques such as domain-
specific optimizations, automated configuration, and gen-
erating components and systems from smaller components or
more abstract representations. Both generative and
component-oriented approaches require changes in analysis
and design methods, particularly, to move their focus from
single systems to system families.
The goal of this symposium is to bring together
researchers and practitioners from different areas related
to generative development and component-based engineering
and to stimulate integrative work. The symposium will
include both a technical papers session (Sept. 29-30) and
pre-conference tutorials (Sept. 28).
Topics The relevant topics include, but are not limited
to:
Integration of Generative and Component-Based Approaches
Metaprogramming Systems
Open Compilers and Open Programming Environments
Template Metaprogramming
Active Libraries
Reflection
Modularly Extensible Languages
Domain-Specific Languages
Aspect-Oriented Programming
Application Generators
Transformation Systems
Partial Evaluation
Component Engineering
Component-Based Development
Integration of forward and reverse engineering
Papers combining concepts from more than one topic area are
preferred.
Submission Guidelines In order to foster a lively exchange
of perspectives on the conference topics, the program com-
mittee encourages contributions from both researchers and
practitioners. Please submit papers in English either via
e-mail (accepted formats: MS Word, Postscript Level 2, PDF;
large files should be compressed) or in paper (3 copies) in
the following categories:
Research Paper (10 pages)
Experience Report (3-6 pages) to the following address:
Ulrich.Eisenecker@T-Online.de
or
Ulrich W. Eisenecker
Bannholzweg 46
69151 Neckargemuend
Germany
Detailed submission guidelines and further updates will be
published at
http://www-stja.transit-online.de/gcse
Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceed-
ings.
