5th Annual Ada-Belgium Seminar

(Organized with Assistance from EC-DGXII, ACM SIGAda & AJPO)

December 18, 1995

Huis van Chièvres, "Groot Begijnhof", Leuven, Belgium

Ada-Belgium is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the use in Belgium of the Ada programming language, the first ISO standardized object-oriented language.

Ada offers commercial developers an ideal blend of consistency, maturity, reliability, and performance. Ada supports the creativity and innovation of top technical talent while providing the discipline and engineering required for critical software systems. No other language is as uniquely qualified for building viable, cost-effective, long-term software solutions. It is a choice you need to consider.

Robert Dewar

Robert Dewar is a professor of Computer Science, and Associate Director of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. He has been involved with Ada for fifteen years.

He was co-director of both the Ada-Ed projects and the GNAT project. He was one of the authors of the requirements document for the Ada revision, and served as a distinguished reviewer for both Ada 83 and Ada 95. He is now also the president of Ada Core Technologies, a company founded to maintain and support the GNAT Ada/95 technology, which is the first validated general purpose Ada 95 system to become available.

Abstracts

Overview of Ada 95

This will be a general introduction to the capabilities of Ada 95, including the object oriented facilities, real time capabilities, and the special needs annexes. We will discuss the relationship of Ada to other languages such as COBOL, C++, Fortran etc, to see why Ada 95 is the preferable choice for a wide variety of programming tasks.

The GNAT Ada/95 Compilation System

An introduction to the technical capabilities of the GNAT Ada 95 compilation system, a free software product providing full Ada 95 capability on many different targets. GNAT has recently been validated on the SGI machines. This talk will also discuss the usage and legal implications of the use of free software.

The Information Systems Annex in Ada 95

The Information Systems Annex is a critical part of the Ada 95 strategy, since it positions Ada 95 as an effective tool for use in the kind of Fiscal and Information Systems applications that in the past have been the domain of COBOL programming. In this talk Robert Dewar, who is also an expert on COBOL, having written the back-end and library for the Computer Associates Realia COBOL compiler, will discuss the annex and its implementation and use, using examples from GNAT, which fully implements the IS annex.

Mixed Language Programming with Ada 95 and GNAT

An important part of the design of Ada 95 is its extensive capabilities for interfacing effectively with other languages. This talk will discuss the relevant features of Ada 95, and will look at their implementation in GNAT, as well as specialized GNAT features in this area, particularly the GNAT interface to C++.

Exhibition

During the Seminar, an exhibition about the Ada-Belgium repository, the Walnut Creek Ada CD-ROM set, the Public Ada Library, ... will be organized.

Free Offer

Copies of the Walnut Creek Ada CD-ROM set, donated by the Ada Joint Program Office (AJPO) via ACM SIGAda, will be freely distributed to the first registered participants, up to the amount available. (Last year we could satify all demands.)

These CD-ROM sets include ports to lots of platforms of the GNU Ada 95 compiler (GNAT).

Documentation

It has become a tradition that lots of interesting documents are distributed (freely) on the Seminar day. For this 5th Annual Seminar, each participant will be offered the Ada 95 Reference Manual (ISO standardized) and the Ada 95 Rationale, two valuable documents for any serious (prospective) Ada user.

Location

The Seminar takes place in the "Huis van Chièvres" at the "Groot Begijnhof", Tervuursevest, B-3000 Leuven. Parking facilities are available nearby (map available).

Participation fee

4000 BEF for Ada-Belgium members
5000 BEF for non-members
Free registration for students, including Ph.D. students (without lunch)
The participation fee includes all coffee breaks and lunch, full documentation, and a free CD-ROM set (up to the amount available). Students can optionally pay for lunch.

The attached registration form has to be returned, signed, preferably before Monday December 11. Students may arrange registration through their institution.

How to get there?

Consult a large map of Leuven (138 Kb JPEG) to find the location of the "Groot Begijnhof": it is just above the "Tervuursevest" in the middle of the south-side of the map.

If you come by car, the map of Leuven and surrounding area (88 Kb JPEG) could be handy. You can use the parking near the "Begijnhof Congreshotel": see location 1 on the map of hotels and parkings (5 Kb).

Also available is information on train connections, bus routes, and hotel accommodation.
