Experiences porting large applications from Ada 83 to Ada 95

Announcement

Ada-Belgium will hold its seventh annual General Assembly on Wednesday, February 23, 2000, at the U.L.B., Department of Computer Science, Boulevard du Triomphe / Triomflaan, B-1050 Brussels, at 19:00.

The official convocation is available, also in PostScript format.

At 20:00 the General Assembly will be followed by a technical presentation plus Q&A, by Philippe Waroquiers from Eurocontrol, Brussels, Belgium.

"Experiences porting large applications from Ada 83 to Ada 95"

Eurocontrol/CFMU has developed two major applications for Air Traffic Flow Management and Flight Plan Processing. These applications, comprising well over a million Ada 83 statements, have been operational since 1995.

Major evolutions of these two applications are planned in the near future, including integration of radar data and the use of CORBA to interface with components written in other languages. To facilitate this, we are currently evaluating the switch from Ada 83 to Ada 95.

The first objective is to have the current applications ported to two different Ada 95 compilers allowing the comparative evaluation of the performance and quality of the two compilers and their associated tools.

In a second phase, Ada 95 language features will be gradually introduced into the applications.

The presentation will focus on the porting exercise:

A separate event announcement is available, also in PostScript format.

Participation

Everyone interested is welcome at either or both parts of this meeting. The event is free.

If you are interested in attending the General Assembly or the technical presentation, we would appreciate it if you could inform us by e-mail. Although no formal registration is required, this helps us preparing the event.

All Ada-Belgium members have a vote at the General Assembly, can add items to the agenda, and can be a candidate for a position on the Board (see the convocation for more details).

If you have not yet renewed your affiliation please do so by paying the appropriate fee before the General Assembly (1999-members receive also a printed request via normal mail, including vouchers for free Walnut Creek double "Ada and Software Engineering" CD-ROMs). If you are interested to become a new member, please register by filling out the 2000 membership application form and by paying the appropriate fee before the General Assembly. Early renewal or registration ensures you receive the full Ada-Belgium membership benefits (including the Ada-Europe indirect membership benefits package).

We still have a limited number of documentation sets available that were distributed freely at the Ada-Belgium'99 Seminar. Each set includes a.o. the Seminar Proceedings and the latest Walnut Creek double "Ada and Software Engineering" CD-ROMs (a special edition for SIGAda'99 and Ada-Belgium'99). These sets will be available on a first-come first-serve basis at the General Assembly for current and new Ada-Belgium members.
Please inform me via e-mail if you are interested in receiving the free documentation set and/or a CD and/or CD-ROMs, so I can bring enough copies with me.
